The Comfort of God

May 11, 20230 commentsAuthor Cynthia Greene

The dictionary defines comfort as “a state of physical ease and freedom from pain or constraint”.  There are many times in our life when we need comfort.  When life situations are difficult, the death of a loved one, during illness, or when we are afraid.

In scripture the primary meaning of the word comfort is “to come alongside to give aid in time of need”.  Another word in scripture for comfort is encouragement.  God, the “Father of compassion” and the “God of all comfort” is the one we can turn to in times of need.

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; (2 Corinthians 1:3)

Numerous scriptures show us that during hard times in our life we can take faith in finding comfort in God.

“…so I will be with you.  I will not leave you or forsake you.” (Joshua 1:5)

“In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. From his temple He heard my voice, and my cry to Him reached His ears.” (Psalm 18:6)

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)

We can take comfort in knowing that God hears our prayers and will comfort us when we are hurt, sad, and brokenhearted. God sees and knows all that we are going thru.  In Hebrews we learn that Jesus Christ came to earth to dwell among us and during that time He experienced suffering, sadness, despair, and other emotions that we go through.

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. – Hebrews 4:15-16

When you find yourself in need of comfort you can draw near to God through: 1) prayer, 2) reading the Bible, 3) meditating on scripture, and 4) singing praise songs.  Take comfort in knowing that God is in control and all things do work out for His good for those that love God and called to His purpose (Romans 8:28). Drawing closer to God to seek his comfort and encouragement will grow our faith and Godly character.
