Spiritual Dieting:  Letting Go of What Weighs You Down  by Cynthia Greene

Every year, we are bombarded with messages about shedding pounds and losing weight. While taking care of our physical health is important, the Bible calls for us to focus on another kind of “weight-loss”—one that involves shedding spiritual, emotional and mental burdens that are weighing us down.  This kind of weight-loss brings freedom, peace, and joy.

The Weight of Disappointment

Proverbs 13:12– “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.”

Disappointment is one of the heaviest burdens we carry. When hopes are delayed or dreams seem to vanish, it’s easy for our hearts to grow weary. God reminds us that even when life doesn’t go according to plan, He can bring fulfillment and restoration in His timing. Spiritual weight-loss begins when we let go of unmet expectations and trust God to guide our desires toward His purpose.

The Weight of Worry

Matthew 6:34– “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Worry can keep us awake at night and distract us during the day. Jesus teaches that each day brings enough challenges, and carrying tomorrow’s burdens today only adds unnecessary weight. Releasing worry means trusting God to handle the unknown, praying for daily guidance, and focusing on what we can control today rather than obsessing over what may never come.

The Weight of Control

Proverbs 35:6—“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Trying to control every situation in life can leave us exhausted and frustrated. God calls us to surrender our need for control and trust Him with the outcomes. Letting go does not mean inaction—it means seeking God’s guidance in prayer and living faithfully, knowing He is orchestrating things beyond our understanding.

The Weight of Self-Reliance

Jeremiah 17:7-8–“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him.”

Relying solely on ourselves often leads to burnout and spiritual fatigue. God invites us to place our confidence in Him rather than our own abilities. Spiritual weight-loss comes from acknowledging our dependence on God, seeking His wisdom, and drawing strength from His power instead of trying to carry every burden alone.

The Weight of Comparison

Gal 6:4– “Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else.”

Comparing ourselves to others can create envy, inadequacy, and unnecessary stress. God calls us to focus on our own journey and growth. Spiritual weight-loss in this area involves celebrating personal progress, recognizing our unique gifts, and finding contentment in God’s plan for our lives instead of measuring ourselves against others.

The Weight of Unforgiveness

Matthew 6:14-15– “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

Unforgiveness is like carrying a heavy backpack filled with anger, resentment, and hurt. It is a heavy pack to hold and slows us down and keeps us trapped in the past, steals our joy, and is a barrier to having peace in our lives.  Spiritual weight-loss begins when we choose to forgive others, whether or not we feel they deserve it.  Forgiveness does not excuse the wrong, nor does it deny the pain, hurt and bitterness we experience.  Instead it releases the burden of justice to God.  In choosing forgiveness we are free to love and serve others more fully.

Spiritual Weight-Loss

Spiritual weight-loss is not a one-time event but a daily practice of surrender, trust, and aligning our thoughts to His way of thinking.  Just as we care for our physical bodies, God calls us to care for our hearts and minds by releasing the burdens that weigh us down.

The process of spiritual weight-loss takes time and effort, but God has given us the Holy Spirit as Comforter, Guide, and Counselor.  The Holy Spirit reminds us of God’s Word, Truth, and promises, helping us to overcome worry, doubt, fear, unforgiveness, control, and self-reliance.  The Holy Spirit guides us in releasing ungodly thoughts and helps us to forgive others so that we can have true freedom.

When we let go of disappointment, worry, shame, the need for control, self-reliance, comparison, anxiety, and unforgiveness, we make room for God’s peace, joy, and freedom to flourish.

By intentionally handing these weights over to God in prayer and trusting His promises, we discover a lighter, freer life—one where our hearts are not anchored by what we cannot change, but lifted by the love and guidance of the One who holds all things in His hands. Spiritual weight-loss is ultimately about walking in the freedom Christ offers, living each day unburdened, and allowing His peace to guard our hearts and minds.
