How Writing Scripture Rewires the Mind

How Writing Scripture Rewires the Mind  by Cynthia Greene

Did you know that science is showing that handwriting can improve your learning ability, renew your mind, and help you place God’s Word in your heart and mind?

Handwriting engages the brain in a completely different way. Brain imaging studies show that writing by hand activates widespread neural networks involved in memory formation, language processing, and motor control. When you write, your brain must plan each letter, coordinate fine motor movements, and visually monitor what you’re producing. This multi-sensory process strengthens neural connections linked to learning.

Research from Princeton University and UCLA found that students who take handwritten notes understand concepts more deeply and retain information longer than those who type notes. Source

God Commanded His Word to Be Written

In scripture we see that God instructed His people to not only hear His Word but to write it out.

Some examples include:

  • Deuteronomy 6:6–9 — “Write God’s commands on your hearts… on your doorposts”
  • Habakkuk 2:2 — “Write the vision and make it plain”
  • Exodus 34:27 — The Lord instructs Moses to write the covenant
  • The King of Israel was to write out the law himself and read it daily.  (Deuteronomy 17:18-19)

Writing Scripture to Renew the Mind

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2)

The way we transform our thoughts is through active renewal.  Through replacing the false thoughts and ideas that we have with God’s truth.  Neural pathways are the way thoughts travel within our brain.

Writing out scripture is a way to slow down your thoughts and concentrate on what you are writing out.  This is a powerful tool that can transform our minds.  Handwriting Scripture is a way to rebuild our neural pathways by replacing false thoughts and ideas with God’s Truth. Lies and negative thought patterns can be replaced and changed, renewed through the “washing of the Word”.

“…that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of the water by the word.” (Ephesians 5:26)

Writing as Meditation

Meditation is a time to slow down and reflect.  When you write out scriptures, the time allows you to pause, contemplate, and internalize the meaning of each word.

“But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night.” (Psalm 1:2)

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success.”  (Joshua 1:8)

Writing As a Way to Hear God

Creating space for the Holy Spirit to guide, convict, comfort, counsel, and teach.

“…the Spirit of truth, is come, it will guide you into all truth: for it shall not speak of itself; but whatsoever it shall hear, that it shall speak: and it will shew you things to come.” (John 16:13)

Writing Engages Heart and Mind Together

David wrote in Psalm 139:14, “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works and my soul knows very well.”

Notice the phrase “my soul knows very well.”  This phrase is referring to a deep knowing and conviction of God’s Truth.  It goes beyond intellectual knowledge to an internalization of God’s word and biblical truth that is in our inner most being.  This is where the practice of hand writing Scripture moves from simply “hearing” God’s Word to deeply knowing it.

It is a practice that we can use to replace the negative thoughts and internal lies with God’s truth and rewire our minds neural pathways. Thoughts such as “I am not enough” are replaced when we meditate and write out Psalm 139: 14, “…we are fearfully and wonderfully made…”.

As we write, meditate, and apply Scripture, the truth of God moves deeper into our hearts and minds, as the scripture says:

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (Joshua 1:8, NIV)

Practical Suggestions

  • Write one scripture per day.

Choose a verse and write it out noticing the key words and promises

  • Write out book of the bible.

Write out a few verses or a chapter each day and meditate on the meaning.

  • Create scripture cards.

Write verses you want to remember and keep them for reference throughout the day.

  • Replace lies with truth.

When negative thoughts come to mind, write it down.  Then write a Scripture that replaces that lie with truth.

Wow, what great information and encouraging words. I have never thought of this before but it makes perfect sense. I find I don’t write much anything so my hand writing as gotten worse. This is something practical I can do to improve my hand writing and improve the renewing of my mind! What a concept.

Thank you again for this message from which I continue to learn.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to the recent blog post. I am glad that you found it encouraging. Handwriting is becoming so infrequent for all of us, especially the younger generation. I am starting to write out the Psalms.
