Covering Your Home with Prayer by Cynthia Greene
Home is more than a place to sleep at night. It is where we live, work, play, worship, rest, heal, laugh, celebrate and spend time with family and friends. It is the place we make our memories, offer prayers, and where we live our faith each day.
In addition to physically cleaning and maintaining our home, it also needs spiritual care. We can intentionally pray and invite God’s presence into every room and into every part of our daily lives.
Psalm 91 reminds us that the Lord is our refuge, shelter, and our protection. The prayers and words we speak have the power to fill our home with God’s love, peace, rest, comfort and presence.
“… The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” (James 5:16)
“Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain.” (Psalm 127:1)
“If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.” (John 14:23)
Below are scriptures and sample prayers you can use to pray over the rooms in your home. If possible, pray these out loud. Invite your spouse, children, or other family members to join you, as you pray and invite God’s presence and His Spirit to dwell there.
Prayer Over Your Property
“The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.” (Psalm 121:8)
“No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, And their righteousness is from Me,” (Isaiah 54:17)
Sample Prayer: Lord, thank you for this home and property that You have blessed us with. Help us to be good and faithful stewards of all your have given to us. Give us wisdom and the desire to care and maintain this place. I pray Your angels stand guard around this home and property day and night keeping it as a place of safety for all who enter. Protect all who enter from harm, danger, fear, natural disasters and man-made destruction. Let this home be a place of rest. Bless our neighbors and help us to be a beacon of hope, love, and kindness to all. Amen.
Prayer Over the Bedrooms
“If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet” (Proverbs 3:24)
“In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” (Psalm 4:8)
Sample Prayer: Lord, I pray peace over this room. Let this be a place of healing, rest, comfort, and safety. Remove all fear, anxiety, nightmares and troubling thoughts. Bless us with deep peaceful sleep that restores the body, mind, and spirit May all who sleep here awaken renewed and strengthened. Amen.
Prayer Over the Kitchen
“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” (Colossians 3:23)
Sample Prayer: Father, thank you for our daily bread and for faithfully providing all our needs. Bless the hands that prepare meals in this home. Protect the food we eat and keep our us healthy and strong. Let the meals be made with love and multiply the food we have so there is always enough to share and bless others. Amen.
Pray Over Dinning Area
“… and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart …” (Acts 2:46)
Sample Prayer: Lord, bless everyone that gathers here to share a meal with us. We pray for meaningful, uplifting conversation and connection around the table. Help our words to be kind, encouraging, truthful and God-inspired. Fill us with gratitude, laughter, and hearts that seek after you. Amen.
Pray Over the Living Room
“But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)
Sample Prayer: Lord, we pray for quality time with family and friends and that we may gather and worship in peace. Bring us together to spend quality time together and help us to uplift and encourage each other in the words that we speak. Fill our home with faith, love and unity. We pray that you fill us with your love to show the spirit of hospitality for all that visit. Amen.
Pray Over the Front Door
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)
Sample Prayer: Lord, place your protection on our home and guard every entrance. Keep out fear, division, harm and anything that is not from You. Let only what is good, pure, just and pleasing to You enter this home. Bless all who enter through these doors and let our family be a light and example to others. Watch over and protect us and keep us safe in your care. Amen.
Pray God’s Presence Over Your Home
Our prayers and words have power and as we pray we are inviting God to be at the center of our lives. Pray daily for the Lord to fill your home and families with His peace, joy, grace, love, wisdom, and truth.
May your home be a place where His presence is reflected and lived out in peace and harmony.
“The Lord bless you and keep you;the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)
