The Lord Will Provide

The Lord Will Provide / Author: Cynthia Greene

The nature and characteristics of God are revealed through the names of God used throughout the Old and New Testament.  Studying the names of God can expand our thoughts and understanding about who God is.

Jehova Jireh is a Hebrew words that mean “The Lord will provide”,  and it is the name of God used in Genesis 22.  Here is where we read the story of Abraham being is asked by God to sacrifice his only son Isaac. Abraham obeys God and prepares to sacrifice his only son and raises up a knife in obedience as he prepares to sacrifice his son. But at that instant the angel of the Lord calls out and stops him and instead God provides a ram for the burnt offering.  Abraham called this place “Jehova Jireh”, “The Lord will provide”.

“…and Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah Jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.” –Genesis 22:14

Abraham obeyed and showed his faithfulness to God and in turn God the provider, “Jehova Jireh” provided a ram so that Isaac did not have to be sacrificed.

“My son, God will provide Himself a lamb” – Genesis 22:8

The name “Jehova Jireh”,” the Lord will provide”, also applies to each one of us, but not in terms of having our physical and material needs being met. Instead God provides for the greatest need we have.  In the Bible we learn that the penalty of our sins is death.  And just as God provided Abraham a ram to be sacrificed instead of his only son Isaac, God has provides a lamb to be sacrificed as a penalty for our sins.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. – John 3:16
