Speak Life

Speak Life by Cynthia Greene

Scripture tells us that the power of life and death lies in our speech, “Death and Life are in the power of the tongue…” (Prov 18:21).  Our words have the power to Bless or Curse others.

We are warned that we will be held accountable for every idle word spoken. “But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.” (Mat 12:36). This is a good reminder to think before we speak.

Paul wrote: “…whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Phil 4:8) as a guide for us to follow in our thoughts and words.

Below are some scriptures to guide our words:

  • Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
  • A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.  (Prov 14:4)
  • Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.  (Eph 4:29)
  • A soft answer turn away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.  (Prov 15:1)
  • Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.  (Prov 16:24)

These Scriptures reminds us to speak words that bring healing, peace, and encouragement. David’s prayer in Psalms 19:14 serves as a model for us, “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.”
