With One Accord / Author: Cynthia Greene
In the Book of Acts we read about God’s people coming together “with one accord”:
Acts 2:1–3, And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. Acts 2:46–47, And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, praising Elohim, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. Acts 4:23–24, 31–32, And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them. And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to Elohim with one accord, ….And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and they spoke the word of Elohim with boldness. And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. Acts 5:12, And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch. Acts 8:6, And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spoke, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.
What does it mean “with one accord”?
“With one accord” means coming together in one-spirit, one-unity and one-mind. To be in complete agreement. It refers to people thinking the same and committing themselves to one focus and belief.
The Greek word for “one accord” is Homothoomadon. Consider these two interesting descriptions of this word:
“A unique Greek word, used 10 of its 12 New Testament occurrences in the Book of Acts, helps us understand the uniqueness of the Christian community. Homothumadon is a compound of two words meaning to "rush along" and "in unison". The image is almost musical; a number of notes are sounded which, while different, harmonize in pitch and tone. As the instruments of a great concert under the direction of a concert master, so the Holy Spirit blends together the lives of members of Christ's church.” (Source: Blue Letter Bible Commentary) "One accord"—translated as "one mind" in the NASB—is from the Greek root word Homothymadon. It brings to mind many notes in harmony or several beings moving forward gracefully. (Source: BibleRec.com)
How do we come together “with one accord”?
On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was given to those gathered together and it as at that time scripture says “when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord.” It is through the Holy Spirit that believers are able to live in “one accord”. To be in unity in God’s purpose in our lives, keeping focus and faith on His coming Kingdom and having the common understanding that the physical things of this life are temporary.
The fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5) provide us a guide on how we should live in words and deeds. Living within the guidelines of The Fruits of the Spirit will unit us and bring us together “with one accord” in the Spirit of God.
“Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be like-minded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:” (Rom 15:5)
