Friend of God – Part 1
Can we be Called a Friend of God?
Is being a friend of God limited to just the great men of the Bible like Abraham? Should we desire to be a friend of God? Are we worthy to call ourselves a friend of God? How do we become a friend of God?
We read in James:
“And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.” – James 2:23
We know that we are the spiritual children of Abraham and in John 8:39 it says “…if you are Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham. “
We see in Gen. 26:5 that the works of Abraham were that he kept God’s commandments. So, as we follow the example set by Abraham and obey God, we too can be called a Friend of God. God confirms we can be called a Friend of God in His word:
This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knows not what his lord does: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. – John 15:12-15
Next week we will post Part 2 entitled “How Do We Build a Friendship With God?“
