Freedom / Author: Cynthia Greene
This week we celebrate July 4th – a time to remember the sacrifices that have been made for us to enjoy freedom we have in America.
However, there is an even greater freedom that each of us has been given–the power to choose.
We were created in God’s image and likeness (Gen. 1:27, 5:1-2) with the ability to think, imagine, create, reason, communicate, complex reasoning, problem-solving, the ability to learn, and to seek knowledge.
The power to choose our actions, thoughts, and emotions has a direct influence on our physical and spiritual health. We are not forced but rather are given the freedom to choose to speak and act within Godly principles.
Scripture reminds us of the consequences of our choices:
All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify. (1 Corinthians 10:23, NKJV)
“I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live..” (Deuteronomy 30:19)
We have been granted the power to choose actions and words that bring glory to God “…do all to the glory of God” (I Corinthians 10:31).
Personal freedom allows us to choose to live either for ourselves or for God.
“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.” (Galatians 5:13)
As we celebrate July 4th, let’s also take time to be thankful for the greatest freedom we have– the choice to obey and serve our God.
“…choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, … But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15, NKJV)
