El Shaddai: The Almighty God Who Is Able to Do All Things
El Shaddai by Sonia McDonald
Before God revealed His ‘Name’ to Moses, He was known by the Hebrew word El Shaddai, which is translated as “God Almighty”. The Hebrew word Shaddai means that God is the ultimate source of power. This name conveys that God has the complete power to do and achieve absolutely anything He wants to do. He is more powerful than anything we can imagine. Hence anything we ask and pray for in His name, He is able to bring to fruition if it is His will and we have asked in need not in greed. If we pray unselfishly for others experiencing trials our Father is merciful and powerful to answer as He sees fit.
Some examples where the word El Shaddai is used in the New Testament include:
Genesis 17:1 (God’s covenant with Abraham):
“When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless. 2 And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.””
God reveals Himself as El Shaddai to Abraham and makes a covenant with him and his descendants.
Genesis 28:3 (Isaac’s blessing to Jacob):
“ May God Almighty bless you and give you many children. And may your descendants multiply and become many nations!.” (NLT)
Isaac prays to bless Jacob with descendants and to make him fruitful.
Exodus 6:3 (God’s revelation to Moses):
“I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as God Almighty (El Shaddai), but by my name the Lord I was not known to them.”
Job 5:17
“Blessed is the one whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty (Shaddai).”
In the book of Job, the term Shaddai is used to describe God’s power, especially in the context of His ability to discipline and guide.
These scriptures speak to God’s relationship with His people through His name El Shaddai, showing us His almighty power and ability to protect, bless, correct and fulfill His promises.
All good things come from the Father, so when someone does a good turn for us, it has been instigated by El Shaddai.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” (James 1:17)
El Shaddai is one of the names of God that can remind us that He is the one to meet all our needs and take care of us. Thank You El Shaddai for Your great wonders we observe each day as we look at Your marvelous creation and the miracles in our own lives.
