A New Name
We Will Be Given a New Name / Author: Cynthia Greene
There are several times in the Bible where God gave a new name to His followers. The name change happened when a new relationship, character quality, role or responsibility was given to the person.
The new name expressed something about the person’s character or was related to the new role and responsibility they would be given.
Examples in the Bible where God gave people a new name:
- Abram’s name was changed to Abraham which means “father of nations”.
- Sarai’s name was changed to Sarah which means “mother of nations”.
- Simon’s name was changed to Peter which means “a rock”.
- Saul’s name was changed to Paul after his conversion.
New Name for the Saints
Did you know that in the future the Saints of God will also be given a new name?
In Revelation we read that each of us that overcomes will be given a new name at the Resurrection.
“To the one who is victorious… a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it” (Rev 2:17)
This new name will reflect our new character, role, relationship, and change into spirit. The new name will be written on a white stone. We read about that in:
“I will also give that person a white stone, and on the stone will be engraved a new name…” (Rev. 2:17)
What a marvelous thing for us to look forward to–when each individual Believer will be given a unique new name written on a white stone.
